From the nation’s inception, Americans have proven themselves a fiercely independent lot. Just ask the British. From the Boston Tea Party to boozing it up during Prohibition, Americans have always risen to the challenge of circumventing laws they deem outrageous. The adage, “where there’s a will, there’s a way,” captures this finely honed Yankee spirit. Thus, it should come as no surprise U.S. citizens are wending their way to the vaccination-card black market as public and private entities begin to issue restrictive mandates requiring inoculation. Indeed, this combination of American ingenuity and a passionately independent spirit is reportedly fueling a robust black market for COVID vaccine cards.

Oppression has always caused the individual to fight. The famed historical American flag – commonly known as the Gadsden flag, which reads: “Don’t Tread On Me” – harkens back to the Roman phrase, “Si vis pacem, para bellum.” In other words, “If you want peace, prepare for war.” Dozens of news outlets report the sales of counterfeit vaccine cards as mushrooming while federal agencies try to play catch up. They insist lethargic, bureaucratic authorities have been no match for these entrepreneurs.
This may have been true in the spring, but it appears openly offering fake vaxx cards has gone underground. In April, Vice published an article detailing how the author bought his fake vaxx card from a seller on Etsy. Other reports claim fraudulent cards were acquired from folks on eBay. In June, NPR reported an Amazon vendor was selling a ten-pack of blank vaccination cards for $12.99. As far as we could determine, these listings have since been removed.
Naturally, NBC News blames this burgeoning black market on former President Donald J. Trump. The Democrat-controlled network claims pro-Trump internet forums are the best places to score a fake card. Despite the leftist media narrative that it is a piece of cake to pick up a fake vaxx card, a cursory search by Liberty Nation found it’s not so easy. Perhaps the counterfeit business has gone clandestine due to a push by the FBI and other law enforcement agencies to frighten people.
In Seattle, the FBI field office put out a warning, announcing harsh penalties for faking COVID-19 vaccination records. Its tweet reads, in part: “It’s actually a crime to do that [purchase a fake card]. It comes with it for each offense, up to a $5000 fine or 5 years in prison.” However, the feds appear to be scrambling because the standard vaccination card is simply a three-by-five piece of cardboard without a hologram or any of the other anti-counterfeit measures usually provided for government documents. Millions of these have already been printed and distributed, making it difficult for authorities to separate the false cards from the real ones.
Why All the Fuss?
It is estimated that 400 universities have adopted stringent new policies requiring students to be vaccinated. New York’s Mayor Bill de Blasio has issued an edict forcing restaurant patrons to show their vaccination cards before being served. Federal employees – both civilian and military – are now required to be vaccinated. The nation’s airlines are on the precipice of making vaccinations mandatory before people are permitted to board an aircraft. In essence, these requirements make the COVID vaxx a necessity for people who want to participate in basic cultural and social activities. But the tighter the noose gets, the larger the underground market for fake cards is likely to become. It is a vicious cycle of tyranny that is ramping up and unlikely to abate anytime soon.
Business and government authorities should think hard about boxing the American public into a corner. Just as it wasn’t that difficult to get a drink during the many years of the eventually repealed Volstead Act, it seems many are willing to risk the excessive punishment that comes from obtaining a fake vaccination card. This political taffy-pull may turn into a great struggle for individual freedom the authorities did not foresee. It could very well fuel the mindset several great Americans must have anticipated when they opined, “When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty.”
