Editor’s Note: Whether on screen or off, Hollywood can always be counted on to keep us entertained. This is especially true when it comes to politics. Join us each week as we shine the spotlight on Tinseltown’s A-listers and their whacky and sometimes inspiring takes on today’s current events.
Is Hollywood Going Gay?
The world is becoming more woke, and Hollywood is at the front of the charge. The left has decided that everyone not white or straight needs to be in the spotlight, so it should come as no surprise that television programs are adding more LGBTQ characters in their lineups.
“This year’s study found that of the 775 series regular characters scheduled to appear on scripted broadcast primetime programming for the 2021-2022 season, 92 characters (11.9 percent) are LGBTQ,” GLADD announced in its 2021-2022 Where We Are on TV report. Just shy of 12% might not seem like a lot, but it’s nearly twice the 7.1% of Americans who identify as “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender or Something Other Than Heterosexual” in a 2021 Gallup poll. That 11.9% is also an increase of 2.8% over 2020. As GLADD wrote in its 2020 report:
“The growing state of LGBTQ representation on television is a signal that Hollywood is truly starting to recognize the power of telling LGBTQ stories that audiences around the world connect with.”
But over-representation on the screen isn’t enough. Have you heard the term heteronormativity? The dictionary defines it as “denoting or relating to a world view that promotes heterosexuality as the normal or preferred sexual orientation.” And, apparently, this is a bad thing – and that’s a problem for Valentine’s Day.
A piece titled “Valentine’s Day: What’s a Feminist To Do” from Everyday Feminist had this to say about this romantic holiday:
“Heteronormativity and gender roles also rear their ugly heads on Valentine’s Day. Gifts for ‘him’ or ‘her’ are clearly divided and marked and it’s almost impossible to find cards that represent queer couples.”
For the left, Valentine’s Day and Hollywood are not gay enough. In fact, GLADD is pushing to have LGBTQ plots in 50% of all movies by 2024. A quick internet search reveals that more than 30 gay movies are coming out this year.
Does the entertainment business have an influence on its audience? According to the Skoll Center for Social Impact Entertainment, it absolutely does. That’s the idea behind the group’s mission to “advance the role of entertainment and performing arts to inspire and drive social change.” Translated into laymen’s terms by YouTuber Mark Dice, that means pushing to have certain agendas or messages written into the plots.
The influence is being seen everywhere – think of Disney’s Sesame Street and how it posted a message supporting Pride Month. Propper Daley is a company that promotes social justice and works with writers, producers, etc., to have scenes and plots with a social impact. Founded by Greg Propper and Mark Daley, these two even have ties to the Clintons. Propper, before co-founding the company, worked with Hillary in 2016 helping her with fundraisers for her presidential campaign which included various A-list celebrities. A few years ago, the company held a private meeting with about 400 writers to encourage them to add more content focused on gays, transgender, and other social issues such as immigration and abortion.
Planned Parenthood doesn’t want to be left out of the social impact movement either. The company’s Arts and Entertainment Engagement Department seeks to promote positive messages about abortions. For example, the 2014 film Obvious Child is billed as a romantic comedy about a girl getting an abortion on Valentine’s Day.
The message is clear. Hollywood is being used to promote the left’s agenda, and audiences are eating it up.
Cheers and Jeers
Sometimes, HollyWeird players make headlines for silly or bizarre happenings, so here is a collection of newsworthy doings — honorable and dishonorable — by the tenants of Tinseltown.
Hillary Clinton’s Book to Be Made Into a Movie
Madison Wells has acquired the rights to make a film adaptation of State of Terror, Clinton’s thriller novel. Clinton and author Louise Penny will serve as executive producers and consultants on the movie. Hillary will be producing via her HiddenLight Productions, which she founded with her daughter, Chelsea, and Sam Branson. No release date has been set so far.
Alec Baldwin and Producers of Rust Being Sued by Family
Attorneys for the family of Halyna Hutchins, the cinematographer who was shot and killed by Alec Baldwin on the set of Rust, have announced a wrongful death lawsuit. This is only the latest suit to be filed against Baldwin and other members of the production.
Dr. Phil’s Toxic Workplace Environment
First, Ellen DeGeneres was accused of having a racist and toxic work environment; now Dr. Phil’s show is in the spotlight for the same alleged offenses. Eleven employees, who told BuzzFeed News they wish to remain anonymous for fear of retribution, said their mental health has become damaged from working on the show. One employee even claimed they were instructed to tell a female guest not to take her prescription “because they wanted her to look unstable and quote-unquote, ‘crazy.’” Phil McGraw – aka Dr. Phil – has denied the charges.
Tune in next week to see what else Tinseltown has planned.
